RSVP to our Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/365875117125856/ OK! I'm not quite sure where my curiosity for peppercorn sprang from, but I'm excited to share why it is a spice you should value a little bit more in your diet! Today Black pepper is a very inexpensive spice, found in today's world, basically anywhere there is food. It wasn't always so common, in fact, it was traded as currency because it was so valuable and rare . Piper nigrum, its scientific name, is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its bunches of fruit. Pictured above you will see variations, not just in color but in age of the pepper. When dried, the fruit is known as a peppercorn. We usually find it in its black, white or green form. The black peppercorn is picked when it is not completel ripe, and then dried. The black is the most flavorful of the three and also has two variations- Tellicherry and Lampong (the two variations are simply in the size of the peppercorn, 4.25mm or bigger is Tellicherry and 4.75 or bigger Lampong). The larger a peppercorn grows the more it loses heat but gains aroma. The white peppercorn has ripened before it is harvested and is better in culinary purposes for obvious reasons. For a white sauce, you would want to use the white peppercorn to avoid speckles in your food vs. if you were using the black. Then the green peppercorn hasn't been dried. It is soft, under ripe and preserved in jars or brine in the refrigerator. They can last for months if unopened. Dried peppercorns (black) can keep for up to 4 months before losing their flavor. Pepper dates back 4000 years ago. Said to be found near the Kerala (southern most region) of India and also has been cultivated in Malaysia and Indonesia since. The Indian culture used it for many medicinal uses: constipation, gangrene, digestion and healing wounds. I also found some additional uses for it in our modern day, but don't quote me on them, I've never tried it out other than culinary purposes: Laundry aid Sprinkle a teaspoon of ground black pepper per load, in your washing machine at the beginning of washing. It will keep the colors bright longer. Soothe a wet cough Pepper stimulates mucus flow and circulation. Add honey as it is a natural reliever for cough and mild antibiotic. In a cup put 1 tsp. of ground black pepper and 2 tbsp. of honey. Pour over boiling water and let it sit for 15 minutes. Or for immediate relief try sucking on a little black pepper on a piece of lemon. Stuffy nose Pepper is a natural decongestant. Chemicals found in black pepper irritate the nose membranes, producing thinner mucus and helping you clear out your sinuses. Take boiling water, add five drops of pepper oil and a dash of eucalyptus oil. Smell and be relieved! Soothe sore muscles and skin My favorite! Black Pepper increases circulation, Combine 2 drops of black pepper oil with 4 drops of rosemary oil, Apply this directly to the skin. When the heat stimulates the skin, your pores open a deeper clean occurs. Improve digestion Black pepper helps with digestion. It stimulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid, which helps digest food allowing you to better absorb the nutrients! Heal a cut Black pepper is used as a home remedy to stop small scrapes and cuts from bleedings. Pepper holds antibacterial properties and it appears that it can make blood coagulate and stop bleeding. SO COOL! Our Dinner "Evolved Peppercorn" last night, consisted of the following: Course 1: Ice Salad Spinach, Arugula, Romaine, Red Wine Vinegar Caviar, Sea Salt, Olive Oil, Black Pepper Course 2: Petite Beef Wellington with Madagascar Vanilla Peppercorn Cream Sauce Course 3: Smoked Salmon Mousse, Parsley Dust, Toast Crumbs, Ginger Macaroon, Black Pepper Cucumber, Parsnip & Garlic Chips and Dill Crema Course 4: Peacock Profiteroles filled with White Pepper Custard and Chocolate If you're interested in a dinner similar to this, please inquire to mezclamaggie@gmail.com We would love to prepare it for you and your guests! Wine pairings available too, wine sold separately. We have decided to host two meetings each month in honor of entrepreneurs, networking and collaboration. We wanted a more intimate atmosphere for sharing and engaging in our ideas and concepts and thought it wise to host our events at different venues each week highlighting two of our members and their business.
It is a free group to join, we just ask that you have a business or support the business highlighted each week. Support does not necessarily mean you purchase something, while of course you are invited to do so, referrals and collaboration or exchange is also acceptable! An example of an exchange would be similar to this: Alli Douglas offers salsa dance lessons in exchange for a meal prep course with Ire, personal chef. They discuss the logistics of when the work should be done, with no monetary exchange involved. Our next meetup with be hosted by Anitra, in her home on January 29th, time TBA. Anitra will be introducing us to a mindful coaching practice that she wants to implement in her own business and as an independent coach. We will in a way be the "attendees," and give her the opportunity to practice as well as get valuable feedback from us, the participants. This mock session will be very valuable for her as she grows her business and in turn we will all find useful advice and wisdom for free as a coach. Secondly, our next meetup will highlight one of our foodie entrepreneurs, Kate Ulicky as she brings samples of some items she is testing for her menu. We get to taste her food, she gets feedback. If you're interested in joining our group please email Mezclamaggie@gmail.com for the directions to our next meetup. If you're not able to attend but still interested in connecting at future meetups, please reach out with your business ideas or concept and we will get you into our next session! Further ahead.... Kellie will be hosting our first February meetup on Wednesday 2/15 beginning at 5:30pm in Evergreen. The happy hour style event will give participants an introduction to the world of diamonds, where you will be allowed to try on jewelry and network with other attendees. Food will be sponsored also by one of our members, TBA. Recipe of the week: Chocolate Ginger Protein Bars, makes 18 bars
Macronutrients: 8.7g Protein, 5.1g Fat, 3.5g Carbs, Total 97kcal/bar The trick to homemade protein bars is using a protein powder that is thick like soy, vegan or casein protein. Never use water for your liquid because you need the fat to hold them together. If you want them to stay together even more, add IMO syrup as your sweetener and enjoy the extra fiber! Twisted Tea Party
When Entrepreneurs Collaborate “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” One of my intentions for the new year is to collaborate more. I firmly believe that we can do more together than by ourselves...in saying that I decided it is time to take action. I invited a few of my female entrepreneurial friends to a tea party to converse about their businesses and ideas and see how we could further support each other and empower others in that process. The conversations will continue. Our plan is to have biweekly meetups highlighting two persons/businesses. Having one host a meetup and another collaborate. For example, one person hosts at their venue/store location and the other brings some of their product/food to supplement the meetup. Each meetup will differ in content and purpose, but the general idea is to highlight or give space for us to learn more and network with one another on a more intimate level. We want to support each other, foster growth and continual learning with the things we are passionate about. (You don't have to have a business, just the desire to connect and collaborate:)) Now Announcing the 2017 Transformation Challenge!
What is it? The past two years we have created a platform for you to learn about the foundations of your health and wellness through a daily challenge group. Individuals follow guided meal and exercise plans while being exposed to different educational topics daily. They are encouraged to participate in each day's challenge to earn bonus points towards a grand prize at the end of the 8 weeks. The person(s) with the most daily challenge complete will win $200. If there is a tie, the tie breaker will be based on final transformation statements submitted by each person reflecting on the things they learned and experienced the last 8 weeks. Each week there is a bonus challenge with a special prize from one of our sponsors. You don't have to be local to win, I will send the prizes to you. There are no requirements on who can participate, where they can participate from and no limitations on how much you can win. There will be optional "meet-ups" in Denver, that will supplement topics we are discussing. The meetups will be recorded, but unfortunately, not live (reception errors in the past took away from the participants enjoyment). Can I participate again if I have done past Transformation Challenges? YES! Of course, research information is constantly being exposed and I am able to present things in new light, as well as provide clearer thoughts, after listening to feedback from previous groups. The prizes and challenges are all completely different, so you will continue to be challenged. What else is different this year? To encourage participants to stay motivated, each week that is fully completed, the participant will receive $5 of their registration back. That means I will be paying YOU to learn! Who are the sponsors this year? We have some awesome companies supporting our participants and their goals! Some of them include: MusclePharm, FieldRoast, Chobani, MaxMuscle and a few others TBA! How much does it cost to register? $100 Registration fee, with $40 back if you complete all 8 weeks What do I have to do? Each day you will be emailed your daily topic and challenge with complete details explaining what you should do and how it relates to your health and wellness. Maggie will keep track of each person's participation. You will also be given a series of documents to guide your fitness and nutrition regiment throughout the 8 weeks. In the past, these plans were customized, however, this year you will be given the tools and space to create your own sustainable plans How much time do I need to commit to this? That is completely up to you. Each daily challenge should only take 10-20 minutes to complete. However, there are some topics you may find more interesting and want to devote more time towards. What has worked well for past participants, is to read the emails and answer first thing in the morning. It is great to get into a routine so you don't miss anything or fall behind; each daily topic is important in it's own way. There are a few scattered "catch up" days throughout the challenge months, to give you the time and space to go back and finish anything you may have missed or wish to dedicate more time on. I'm on board! What's next? After you register, you will be sent a readiness questionnaire that needs to be completed and returned to Maggie before the start of the challenge on January 1st. After this is completed and returned, Maggie will send you the series of files needed to guide you through the next two months. Easy as that! You will read through and familiarize yourself with the information. How is this a group thing? We will also have participants welcomed into a private Facebook group where they can share thoughts, inspiration, and best of all have a bunch of new virtual friends! If you don't have Facebook, it's not a problem, all information will also be sent to your email address. Make sure the email address you provide is one that you have access to everyday during the challenge months (not a work email). We are excited to have you on board and welcome in the New Year strong and confident! Please feel free to reach out to Maggie directly if you have questions or concerns: mezclamaggie@gmail.com or sign up here: http://www.mezclamaggie.com/challenge-competitions.html |
