Eating the right fats will keep you full, tame your blood sugar levels and keep your abdomen trim. Most of the time people think if they eat fats, they will get fat. While the truth is really much more complex than that.
We need healthy fats to keep our hormones in check, to keep our body temperature in line, to help us absorb fat soluble nutrients and vitamins, just to name a few!
The most important thing to note is where your fats are coming from. If you are looking to avoid fats because you think they will make you fat—then you should be avoiding trans fats which are found in all fried foods. Similarly, if you look at the ingredient lists on pre-packed snack items like chips and peanut butter filled cracker sandwiches, you will often see "partially hydrogenated" or "hydrogenated" oils. These are up there on the list of "bad" fats because they are chemically processed so that your food lasts FOREVER, literally. Ever hear about the experiment to see if a McDonald's burger depreciated after time? Yeah...it stayed the EXACT same form shape everything about 6 months! Imagine that inside of you. No wonder you're stomach isn't getting smaller.
Believe it or not, up until recently there wasn’t even a daily recommendation for how much fat we should consume in our diets. Now, however, that percentage is recommended to be around 25% of our caloric intake should be from healthy fats.
So what's a healthy fat? Rich in monounsaturated fats and unsaturated fats. you know, things like coconut oil, avocado, cheese, natural peanut butter, butter. Have the real deal, not something man made and processed.
We NEED fat to function, so don't avoid it, that won't help. Eat it, and the right kinds. Data shows that while Americans consumed a lower percentage of calories from fat in 2000 than they did in 1971, the total number of calories consumed per day increased by more than 300!
Here's a fun and delicious recipe with REAL HEALTHY FATS, fiber and nutrients!
Cauliflower Mac & Cheese
(Ketogenic Diet Friendly)
Assemble all ingredients. You may flash the cauliflower in boiling water if you wish for a more tender "mac n cheese," otherwise chop into small pieces and spread in baking dish. In small saucepan combine butter, milk and mustard. Heat slowly while whisking ingredients till combined. slowly add in the shredded cheese and spices. When this mixture has all come together, pour over cauliflower and bake in preheated over at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Take out and enjoy!
To Many Cultures Haldi Ka Doodh, also known as "Golden Milk", is a staple.
"Tumeric is an incredibly powerful anti-inflammatory & anti-oxidant herb. Tumeric has been shown to detoxify the liver, assist in the removal of mucus, lower cholesterol, help to manage weight, treat IBS, provide iron, and and is a wonderful herbal remedy for the treatment of stiff, sore, arthritic, or inflamed joints. Studies suggest it could be useful in preventing cancers, heart disease, type 2 diabetes. It is also a digestive tonic, antiseptic, antiparasitic, astringent, pain reliever, blood purifier, wound healer, kidney-stone dissolver, eczema treatment, and more." (Taken From Sara Vance's Blog check it out if you haven't yet. She has shifted her life from obesity to Foggy brain, Low Fat, Diet Soda Diet to whole food and thriving!)
There is an obvious virtue to this milk. It has been concluded that by incorporating turmeric, with the active chemical Curcumin, that there are effects of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and neuroprotective activities. It is limited though, especially for humans, in it's ability when taken orally and doesn't properly absorb. That's why in this recipe, we have included Fresh ground pepper.(so don't leave it out!:)) Black pepper stimulates the taste buds to tell your stomach to digest! it works with the proteins and other food to increase hydrochloric acid, when this is low we are unable to properly digest and often have gas, irritation, bloat and possible diarrhea or constipation.
Recipe for Golden Milk
Step 1: Turmeric Paste:
1/4 cup of organic turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon of organic ground pepper 1/2 cup of filtered water Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a small a small sauce pan and mix well. Turn the heat to medium high and stir constantly until the mixture is a thick paste. This does not take long so don’t walk away from the pan.
Let this mixture cool and then keep it in a small jar in the fridge. The longer it stays in the fridge the less effective it is so be sure to use it within a few weeks at the longest.
Step 2: Golden Milk
1 cup of organic milk (almond/hemp/coconut are good options) 1 teaspoon of organic coconut oil 1/4 teaspoon or more of turmeric paste Organic honey
Warm mixture in small sauce pan to desired temperature. Or enjoy chilled!:)

I want to share with you all some of the vegan recipes I made recently for one of our client's 30th birthday bash. It's so frustrating to hear these days how "messed up," people's stomachs and digestive systems are because of all the chemicals and processing our food undergoes before it gets to us.
The key to avoiding most stomach discomfort is to consume ford that is "whole." What does that even mean? I can only eat food from Whole Foods? Yes IC an eat the whole sandwich or the whole pizza...?!
A "whole," food is simply one in which the ingredients have been processed or refined as minimally as possible and is free of additives or artificial substances.
Our bodies run more efficiently consuming food in its natural form. While processing is necessary to keep foods longer, the reality of it, is that there are better choices that are minimally processed. Example: frozen vegetables, frozen fruits The processed foods that really get our body's in a funk are those that have been overly manipulated like potato chips, crackers, candy, canned soups, boxed cereals, etch.
Think of it this way... when you buy bananas, they start to brown as the age right? This shows their deterioration and loss of nutrients. So imagine now a "food like item" such as potato chips.. you never see it change form from the original natural state. It stays the SAME from the moment you get it, open the package and to the time it hits your lips. So imagine that in your stomach... there isn't anything "real," about it.
Food is by definition "a substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin and contains essential nutrients, fats, proteins, vitamins or minerals."
Our bodies were not made to be able to digest chemicals..we just don't know how to handle them properly. Most processed foods DO have caloric energy, this is true. But they don't have any essential nutrients that qualify them as a real food. Ever wonder why you're never full from eating a bag of chips? There isn't any substantial nutrient in it..no fiber which we know satiates us. But our brain lovesss them because the foods have been engineered to reward our bran making us want more and more(literally like a drug) leading to overconsumption.
I could rant on and on..bottom line is, you're safest if you eat majority of your food in its most natural state.

Today we wanted to highlight a local theatre company we are working with next weekend! Curious Theatre Company, located on Acoma Street in Denver has 27 directors, actors and designers and has been producing great theater since 1998! I think their slogan alone, "No guts, no story," tells you everything you need to know about this unique and thought-provoking theatre company in our very own Denver, Colorado. They take a modern spin on traditional theatre, making the shows truly relatable for anyone living today. Take for example, "Sex with Strangers," that follows the passionate story of two writers, one a blogger; or "Elliot: A Soldier's Fatigue," that takes place during the Iraq war. If you haven't heard of them, you'll surely want to check them out!
Next weekend Curious Theatre Company is hosting their annual gathering where they tell sponsors and ticket buyers about these wonderful shows for the upcoming production season. Mezcla Maggie has been honored with the task of feeding these inspiring folk a spectacular brunch, including lemon-poppyseed and blueberry scones, egg or sausage burritos and fruit cups! Yum yum!
Don't want to miss this? Visit Curious Theatre Company for more information! The event is Saturday February 6th 2016. Missed the event? You can still check out Curious Theatre Company for this season's line-up! Not sure you're into theater? Try volunteering as an usher and after two shifts you'll get complimentary admission to see the show for yourself!
